Youth Theatre for Auditions for Youth 18 and Under
The Mainstage production represents a distinctive collaboration between the Department of Theatre and UtahPresents. This partnership involves university students majoring in theatre, who participate both as performers in the show and as members of the creative and production teams. Additionally, UtahPresents is responsible for managing the school matinees, overseeing all aspects of ticketing, and technical support once we are on their stage.

Charting Neverland
AUDITION INFORMATION
Charting Neverland is a theatrical exploration of memory, grief, and the emotional process of healing, set against the fantastical backdrop of Neverland. The story follows Ash, a young protagonist, as they embark on a journey through a magical yet fractured Neverland. This is a Neverland shaped by loss, where Peter Pan's forgotten shadow has grown, feeding on memories left behind and the island’s lingering magic. The shadow now threatens to erase all that is wondrous about Neverland, and Ash, grappling with the loss of their grandmother, must restore what has been forgotten. Along the way, Ash gathers wisdom from Neverland's inhabitants - The Lost, the Tinkers, Sirens, Pirates, and others - realizing that the path to healing isn't about defeating the shadow but embracing both light and dark, memory and loss. As Ash comes to terms with their grief, they begin to understand that the memories they hold are enough to carry them forward.
January 4th
- The date for Charting Neverland auditions is Saturday, January 4th from 10 am - 1 pm. Students in 3rd - 12th grades are invited to audition and should plan to attend the entire 3 hour time slot. If you cannot attend, you can submit a video of a song and monologue by January 3rd.

Here's what we'll be doing at our in-person auditions!
- Singing Songs: You'll get to sing a part of a song from the musical. Don't worry, we'll help you and run the music all together before we ask you sing on your own.
- Reading a Scene: We might have you read a short scene. This is a great way to show off how any acting skills and character work you have.
- Practice Makes Perfect: When available, you can find the songs and the script below so you can practice before the audition. But don't worry if you don't have it memorized – we'll go through everything together during the audition.

MAIN CHARACTERS:
- ASH – The central character, navigating through grief and self-discovery. Courageous, determined to mend Nana Wendy's journal, and bring their siblings back.
- EMBER – Ash’s sibling, playful and inventive. Transformed into a Tinker in Neverland.
- RIVER – Ash’s other sibling, adventurous, leader of the Lost in Neverland.
- NANA WENDY – Ash’s grandmother and the original storyteller of Neverland. She provides wisdom and guidance through her journal.
- MOM (CAPTAIN TWO HANDS) – The pirate captain in Neverland, representing the mother figure who clings to control but must learn to let go of what’s lost.
- DAD (TIGER LILY) – The protector of Lily’s Grove, wise and nurturing, helps Ash understand the value of change and memories.
- GRANDPA (TIME TAILOR) – A gentle figure who helps Ash stitch together the journal and teaches them about healing and time.
SUPPORTING CHARACTERS:
- AUNT 1, AUNT 2, AUNT 3 (THE SIRENS) – In the real world, they’re practical, somewhat humorous relatives. In Neverland, they transform into Sirens, seductive and dangerous.
- THE SHADOW – The main antagonist, created from Peter Pan’s lost shadow, filled with loneliness and resentment, and seeking to reclaim what it feels it has lost.
- STORYTELLERS – A group that helps set the scene, narrate the story, and embody various elements of Neverland like shadows, Tinkers, and other inhabitants.
OTHER CHARACTERS:
- TINKERS (Twinkle, Zephyr, Stardust, Aurora) – Magical fairies in Tinkers’ Tunnel who assist Ash and Ember in finding a path forward. They emphasize the importance of belief.
- THE LOST (River’s followers) – Wild, carefree children who live in Neverland under River’s leadership. They initially challenge Ash before helping them.
- PIRATES – The chaotic crew under Captain Two Hands (Mom). They love plundering and looting but are trapped in Neverland, trying to cling to their past treasures.
SPECIAL APPEARANCES:
- CROCODILES (Ensemble) – Little crocodiles, resembling the one with a ticking clock from the original story, perform a rhythmic tap dance, adding a playful element to the Time Tailor’s scene.
- FLOWER CHORUS (The Lilies) – The flower guardians of Tigerlily’s Grove.

Here's what you need to know about missing rehearsals at YTU.
Overall Rule: Try Not to Miss! Our theatre works like a team, so it's important everyone shows up for rehearsals, costume fittings, and shows.
Before You Get a Role:
- Let Us Know Early: If you know you'll miss some days, tell us on your audition form. We can't promise it'll be okay, but we'll think about it.
- Check with Us: If we haven't talked to you about your missed days, ask us to make sure it's okay.
After You Get a Role:
- Sick? : If you're too sick to come, you need to email us as soon as you know.
- How to Call Out: If you can't make it, you need to contact us as soon as possible.
We know life can be busy, but being part of the play means committing to being there. If you have to miss, just talk to us and we'll figure it out together!
Here are some important rules to follow when you're part of our theater group.
- Keeping Your Look the Same: Once you're part of our play, try not to change how you look (like cutting your hair) without asking the director and costume folks first.
- Respect the Space and Others: Stay quiet and focused when it's not your turn. If you need to leave, let the stage manager know where you're going.
- Be Aware and Prepared: Always be ready for your part. Bring everything you need like pencils, your script, a water bottle, and maybe a snack for break time. Also, turn off your phone so you can focus.
- Dress Right for Rehearsal: Wear shoes and clothes that are comfy and right for moving around. Remember, no street shoes in the rehearsal space.
- Be Clean and Considerate: Keep clean and fresh when working closely with others. Basic hygiene is super important!
- Personal Space is Key: Only touch others when it's part of the scene.
- Do Your Part: Everyone has a role to play, and it's important to do your best. If you're not comfortable with something, talk to the director or production manager.
- Electronics: A No-No During Rehearsals: Keep your phones and gadgets away during practice unless the director says it's okay.
- Sign In and Stay Put: Always sign in for rehearsals and performances. Don't leave the room or the building without asking first.
- Keep It Clean: Help keep our space tidy. Clean up after yourself.
- In Case of Emergency: If something serious happens, tell the Stage Manager right away.
- Be Nice to Everyone: Always be polite and friendly to everyone in the production. Saying "please" and "thank you" goes a long way!
- Things Not to Do:
- Don't come to rehearsals or shows if you're not feeling well.
- Don't touch or move someone else's props.
- Being rude or unsafe is not okay and may result in you losing your part in the show.
Remember, these rules help us all have fun and make great theatre together! If you have questions, just ask someone in charge.
